Lyon raise tensions ahead of weekend derby with Saint Etienne by liking post of image of rival’s pitch turned red… one year on from game featuring Nabil Fakir’s infamous celebration
- Lyon and Saint Etienne meet in the Rhone-Loire derby on Friday evening
- Advert from Lyon’s sponsors Adequat has heightened tensions ahead of game
- They photoshopped a picture of the pitch so that it would be green, not red
The tensions between Lyon and Saint Etienne have been raised by a post on social media.
The two sides meet in the Rhone-Loire derby on Friday evening and a number of photos have been posted on Facebook which show the pitch at Lyon’s stadium painted red.
It is part of an advert from Lyon’s sponsors Adequat, and it has served to increase the anger between the two sides. Lyon have also liked the post, seemingly endorsing it.
Lyon’s sponsors Adequat uploaded two photos of the club’s ground to their Facebook page
The second, with the pitch photoshopped to be red, is seen as a dig at Saint Etienne
The idea of the image is to show Lyon have removed any hint of green at their stadium. Green is, of course, Saint Etienne’s colour.
There have been suggestions among supporters that Adequat, who sponsor Lyon’s sleeves, are mocking the away team. They will not be allowed to have any fans in the ground.
They have been barred from any presence inside the Parc OL because of incidents that occurred in last season’s game.
When they met in the 2017-18 campaign, Lyon won the game 5-0. There was a pitch invasion after Nabil Fekir scored the fifth goal.
Tensions are high between the two rivals — they grew after Nabil Fekir’s famous celebration
He removed his shirt and celebrated in front of the Saint Etienne fans, holding the top aloft so they could see his name and number on the back.
The players from both teams had to be taken off the pitch for an extended spell and there was temporary fear the game would not be finished.
There is often tension between the two clubs. There were suggestions that when Lyon’s new ground was built, they would not have the number 42 anywhere as it is the department number for Loire, which is where Saint Etienne are based.
