Rennes vs Arsenal, LIVE – Gunners look to maintain perfect away record against French opposition in Europa League last-16 clash

  • Unai Emery is looking to lead Arsenal to first leg lead over French side Rennes
  • Europa League game has been billed as the biggest game in Rennes’ history
  • Julien Stephan’s team have been given eight days to prepare for last 16 tie
  • Arsenal starting XI: Cech, Mustafi, Papastathopoulos, Koscielny, Monreal, Torreira, Xhaka, Mkhitaryan, Özil, Iwobi, Aubameyang
  • Rennes starting XI: Koubek, Zeffane, Da Silva, Sitoe, Bensebaini, Sarr, André, Grenier, Bourigeaud, Hunou, Ben Arfa

Arsenal take on Rennes in what has been billed as the biggest game in the Ligue 1 club’s history.

The first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie is at Roazhon Park and Julien Stephan’s side have been given extra time to prepare with Unai Emery’s men in town.

Emery is accustomed to success in the competition having lead Sevilla to three consecutive titles and will be looking to add a fourth crown with the Gunners this year.

Coming off the back of a frenetic North London derby and with their clash against Manchester United looming large, fatigue could play a decisive factor and the visitors may be ripe for an upset.

Unai Emery insists Arsenal will not use fatigue as an excuse if they suffer a shock Europa League in Rennes defeat on Thursday night .

In a week where Mauricio Pochettino scolded the Premier League by insisting their busy domestic schedule has hampered Tottenham’s Champions League hopes – his opposite number in north London has refused to point the finger at English football chiefs.

Thursday’s match has been billed as the biggest in Rennes history – and the Ligue de Football Professionnel postponed their scheduled game against Nimes last weekend to allow Julien Stephan’s team eight days to prepare for the Europa League last 16 tie against the Gunners.

If this becomes a bit of a dog fight that requires a moment of magic to win it, Ben Arfa may well be the man to make the difference.

The mercurial forward has all the ability in the world and a questionable temperament so all eyes will be on the Rennes dangerman.

Grenier is a lovely player and Sarr is a young winger with plenty of promise.

Unai Emery has named a strong Arsenal line-up with plenty of firepower to blow Rennes away if the Gunners are in the mood.

Aubameyang, Ozil, Iwobi and Mkhitaryan will provide the goal-scoring threat and on paper at least, this side have plenty in the tank.
