Patrick Day in coma after suffering brutal knockout, source says

Junior middleweight Patrick Day is fighting for his life in a Chicago hospital after suffering a 10th-round knockout against Charles Conwell on Saturday night. The fight took place at Wintrust Arena on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut, which ended with a seventh-round TKO of Chazz Witherspoon.

Day, 27, was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital after being knocked unconscious by the undefeated Conwell. Day was down for several minutes before a medical staff took him away on a gurney in a frightening scene. He suffered a seizure before arriving at the hospital and remained unconscious.

A source close to the Day family told DAZN News that Day underwent emergency brain surgery to reduce swelling and was in a medically induced coma.

Conwell, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, dominated much of the fight but there was no sense Day was in danger until he was dropped with a left hook. The fighter from New York went down hard with his head bouncing violently off the canvas. He was out cold and referee Celestino Cruz immediately called a halt to the bout at 1:46 of Round 10. Day lay motionless as he received immediate medical treatment.

He was administered a breathing tube at the hospital prior to surgery, the source told DAZN News.

Day (17-4-1) is a former WBC continental Americas super welterweight champion who suffered his second consecutive loss after winning six fights in a row from April 2016 to February 2019. He was named as an Olympic alternate in 2012.
