Frankie Dettori jokes he wants to carry on riding to save his marriage

Frankie Dettori aims to continue racing at the top level for at least two years after joking he needs to do so to keep his marriage going.

The Italian who won a career-best 19 Group One races last year celebrates his 50th birthday in December.

He is among the most famous faces in his sport and will soon be back in the saddle after a 76-day coronavirus-enforced break was ended.

And having spent over two months in lockdown Dettori is now desperate to get back to the track.

"I've had a taste of retirement and I'll tell you what – I don't like it," he told Sky Sports Racing.

"The pair of us [Dettori and his wife Catherine Dettori] don't like it. I don't think I've been home for more than three days [in the past], so to have two-and-a-half months locked inside isn't for me.

"So I decided to give myself an extra couple of years at least. No reason to retire because I'm still quite fit.

"Obviously you know I'm going to be 50 this December and for a jockey that's the magical age but even in other sports longevity is more.

"I'm not going to set a target, I'll carry on for as long as my body and legs can do it. And I'm still in demand. So at the moment those two things are in place."

And he joked: "And we're just going to carry on… to save the marriage."

Dettori was the leading jockey at Royal Ascot last year with seven wins, including one on Stradivarius in the Gold Cup.
