Sportsmail’s Marcus Townend is officially No 1 after being named Racing Reporter of the Year

  • Sportsmail’s Racing Correspondent named Racing Reporter of the Year 
  • Townend saw off challenges from the Guardian’s Chris Cook and Bill Barber
  • He also beat Lee Mottershead of the Racing Post to win the prestigious award 

Marcus Townend, Sportsmail’s Racing Correspondent, has been crowned the Racing Reporter of the Year at the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association Derby Awards in London.

Townend saw off challenges from the Guardian’s Chris Cook and Bill Barber plus Lee Mottershead of the Racing Post to win the prestigious award.

He said: ‘It is a great honour and a privilege to win an award of this nature which is voted for by my peers.

‘The three other writers in the category are terrifically talented, so it was a huge surprise to win, but outsiders sometimes do!’
