The Phillies and Indians meet Saturday in Cleveland for the middle game of a series that has wild card implications for both teams.
A three-game sweep of Detroit pulled the Indians into a tie for the second AL wild card spot, and Friday’s 5-2 win over Philadelphia kept them deadlocked with the Rays, two games behind the A’s for the first wild card position.
Time may have run out for the Phillies to get back into the race for the NL wild card, falling five games behind after Friday’s loss.
Zach Plesac (8-6, 3.64 ERA) is starting for Cleveland, coming off a complete game shutout over the Angels. Jason Vargas (6-8, 4.48 ERA) will take the mound for the Phillies. He has a 5.48 ERA in nine starts since being traded from the Mets, and each of his past two outings lasted just three innings.
Saturday is the second game of a three-game set between the Indians and Phillies. Including Saturday, Cleveland has just eight games remaining, but Philadelphia has 10 remaining.
