Adesanya: Homophobia caused criticism of 'humping' celebration

‘I couldn’t give a f*** what they think’: Israel Adesanya claims homophobia caused criticism of his ‘humping’ celebration after beating Paulo Costa at UFC 253

  • Adesanya added insult to injury by appearing to hump his opponent at the end
  • The humiliating moment caused fury in Costa’s camp and among UFC fans
  • Adesanya claimed homophobia was the reason his celebration was slammed

Israel Adesanya has spoken out after coming in for criticism for his celebration after beating Paulo Costa, claiming homophobia is the reason his post-victory actions were slammed.

With referee Jason Herzog moving in to end the bout at the end of last month, Adesanya added insult to injury by pretending to hump Costa before moving away to celebrate the victory at UFC 253 in Abu Dhabi.

The humiliating moment caused fury in Costa’s camp, but after coming in for huge criticism, the middleweight champion has since admitted he couldn’t care less what people think.

‘I couldn’t give a f*** what they think to be honest,’ Adesanya told MMA Fighting. ‘I didn’t even think about it. I didn’t even plan it. It was just justified.

‘Like you know when you’re on “Call of Duty” and you smoke someone with a head shot and then you go over them and then press circle, down, up, down, up, kind of tea bag them. That’s kind of what I did.

‘What it is, is homophobia. People are just mad “why are you doing that, you’re not a man” cause they feel inadequate. Questioning their own sexuality.’

Adesanya and his arch rival Costa, like many within UFC, were embroiled in a heated war of words before their fight.

And the 31-year-old has linked the back-and-forth exchanges to his excessive celebrations after his technical knockout.

‘Dude said so much s*** to me leading up to the fight, insulted me in so many different ways,’ Adesanya added. ‘That was pretty much a second after the fight was over and you expect me to be gracious? Are you f****** kidding me?

‘I was gracious when I walked up to him and said “are you going to shake my hand?” and he shook my hand and I said good fight, thank you. Thank you for the game.

‘I was gracious when I secretly DM’d him and checked “how’s your leg?” I just wanted to check on him.’

But it wasn’t just Adesanya’s celebrations that drew criticism, after he made a series of lewd comments in the direction of his rival’s corner.

The Brazilian threw a white belt in the direction of Adesanya at a face off during fight week, in an apparent jibe at the latter’s jiu jitsu, which angered him to the extent that UFC president Dana White had to restrain the ‘Last Stylebender’ from attacking his rival.

And after landing the victory, Adesanya made his feelings known towards Costa’s camp.

‘I wrap my d*** around my waist it’s a black belt, motherf*****’ he said, in reference to the white belt gimmick from Costa in the build-up to the title bout.

The champion then made his way to Costa’s corner to chat with his trainers. The conversation appeared cordial, until Adesanya said ‘Imma c** all over you’.

The 31-year-old then went onto breakdance while Costa was still receiving treatment from doctors just feet away.
