Put J.R. Smith’s shirt on the side of a milk carton.
The Lakers’ shooting guard — and now two-time NBA champion, thank you very much — didn’t waste any time disrobing after the Lakers’ 106-93 win over the Heat in the deciding NBA Finals game on Sunday, as is customary for Smith.
In fact, Smith didn’t even wait for the final gun to go topless, as he was spotted without his uniform top with about 15 seconds left in the contest.
What makes the situation even more delightful is that several Lakers seem to have followed suit, with Kyle Kuzma, Dwight Howard and Alex Caruso all appearing shirtless after the win. Veteran leadership at its finest. Plenty of people noticed a common thread: Smith.
(Hey, if you were chiseled out of granite like a statue of a Greek god, you, too, would likely go shirtless after a championship victory.)
The legend of Shirtless J.R. started following the Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA Finals win, when the journeyman shooter was spotted shirtless in Las Vegas, celebrating his first ring. Smith remained shirtless as he was getting off the plane the next morning in Cleveland, and was shirtless for the duration of the Cavs’ championship parade, as well.
In case you were wondering, J.R. Smith’s stat line in the finals: three shot attempts, one make in just over 10 minutes in Games 1, 2 and 3. He did not play in Games 4 and 5 and was inactive (aside from actively taking off his shirt) in Game 6.
Maybe this will clear the way for the next evolution of Smith — pantless.
