The Nuggets are finalizing a trade around Cavs center JaVale McGee, league sources told The Denver Post, just hours ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.
The deal is expected to send Nuggets center Isaiah Hartenstein back to Cleveland in addition to two future second-round picks, the sources told The Post. One of those picks is protected, a source said.
The Nuggets sought a veteran rim protector and believe McGee fits that mold. The Cavs were one of the teams interested in Hartenstein before he landed in Denver this offseason, according to a source.
McGee may not be the Nuggets’ only move ahead of the deadline. They’re still among the leading contenders to land Orlando forward Aaron Gordon.
McGee, who spent parts of four seasons in Denver from 2012 to 2015, helped the Lakers knock the Nuggets out of the Bubble in last year’s Western Conference Finals. He’s played sparingly for the Cavs this season, but has still averaged 8 points and 5.2 rebounds in just over 15 minutes per game.
McGee, 33, can be a free agent this offseason but addresses the Nuggets’ significant need for size in the paint.
