Adam Vinatieri sets NFL career scoring record

Adam Vinatieri has made countless big kicks in his NFL career, but a simple 25-yard field goal Sunday against the Raiders is one he’ll remember longer than most.

That field goal late in the second quarter pushed the 45-year-old kicker past Morten Andersen (2,544 career points) to make him the NFL’s all-time scoring leader.

It has seemed inevitable for a couple of seasons now that the steady Vinatieri would catch Anderson, who played from 1982 through 2007. And he’ll likely hold the career mark for many years; the next active kicker on the list, Sebastian Janikowski, has 1,844 career points.

Vinatieri, who began his career with the Patriots in 1996, joined the Colts in 2006. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he’s been a member of four Super Bowl championship teams.
