Blake Bortles has been benched.
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone announced in a news conference Monday that backup quarterback Cody Kessler will start against the Indianapolis Colts this week, part of a series of changes Marrone hopes will help spark the team's lowly offense.
"I had a chance to talk to both Blake and Cody earlier today and I told both those guys the same thing: I'm making this change to give us an opportunity to win a football game," Marrone told reporters. "Cody knows the offense. He's been in where he's not really prepared that week, so he'll have a full week of preparation."
Bortles, the No. 3 overall pick in 2014, is coming off one of his worst performances of the season. He completed 12 of 23 passes for 127 yards in a 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Overall, he has completed 60.4 percent of his passes this season with 13 touchdowns and 10 picks.
