Coach Prime impressing CU alums Vance Joseph, Eric Bieniemy

Prime Mania has fully taken hold in the football world.

A pair of alums coaching in the NFL are reveling in the warp-speed revitalization coach Deion Sanders has overseen at Colorado.

Eric Bieniemy, of course, was CU’s leading rusher when it won the national championship in 1990. Now, he’s the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator and is returning to the Front Range on Sunday for a game against the Broncos.

“I’m happy for the things that have taken place down in Boulder,” Bieniemy told reporters Thursday before throwing a jab at Nebraska, which CU beat 34-16 on Saturday. “It’s always good to beat the University of ‘Nowledge. Nobody got that one, huh? That’s alright.”

On Sunday afternoon, he’ll match wits with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, a longtime friend who was a freshman quarterback on that title team.

Joseph’s been closer to the action in Boulder, though he’s still watching from afar, in a way, thanks to the scheduling demands of the NFL season.

“It’s been fun, man,” Joseph said. “It’s been a long time since they won up in Boulder, and the excitement from the spring game up until now has been fun for all of us to watch. Obviously Prime has done a great job with making the program relevant, but now it’s right. He’s winning games. The quarterback is a special player. What (two-way star cornerback/wide receiver Travis) Hunter is doing is special. It’s back to what it used to be a long time ago. It’s fun for all of us to see it happen and it’s exciting.”

As much energy as there is around the Buffs, Joseph and Bieniemy each laughed off the possibility they could make it to Folsom Field for the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Saturday when the No. 18 Buffs (2-0) take on Colorado State (0-1). But they’ll be keeping tabs on their surging alma mater.

It’s cool to be affiliated with CU once again.

“I’ll be watching from the hotel and it’ll be a lot of fun,” Bieniemy said. “I’ve got a bunch of family and friends that will be in Colorado. They’re going to support the Buffs and then they’ll support the Commanders as well.”
