This is the Morning Win, by Andy Nesbitt
While we patiently wait for the pivotal Week 17 of the NFL season to get here on Sunday, let’s sit back on this final day of 2020 and yell about something that doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things but is fun to debate when we’re bored – the 2020 NFL MVP award and how it should go to Bills QB Josh Allen.
Oh man, I said it! Josh Allen should be the NFL MVP this year and people who have the voting power for such an award should make the right call and check the box next to the Bills QB’s name.
I know what you’re thinking – what about Patrick Mahomes, who has the Kansas City Chiefs primed for a back-to-back run to the Super Bowl?
And what about Aaron Rodgers, who is now the heavy betting favorite to win the award?
To those questions I give you a simple answer that is unbeaten – whatever!
Yes, Mahomes is a special talent and the best QB in the league but he has struggled a little bit down the stretch.
Yes, Rodgers is still one of the best QBs in the league and has the Packers ready to make another run in the playoffs and has had yet another typical Aaron Rodgers year.
But what Allen has done this year in Buffalo is more impressive than what either of those guys have done – he’s given a desperate franchise and even more desperate fanbase something that doesn’t show up in any stats and something that hasn’t existed in Buffalo in years.
He’s given them hope.
And a 12-3 record going into the final game of the season.
A few weeks ago the Bills won their first AFC East title since 1995, back when the internet was barely a thing and Allen wasn’t even a thing – the QB was born in 1996.
Just the other day the Bills finished off a sweep of the hated (and usually dominant) Patriots for the first time since 1999.
Now the Bills, who were told yesterday that they can have some fans at their home playoff games, are heading to the playoffs with a whole lot of swagger under their belts and much of that is due to their 24-year-old QB.
Allen has been dominant down the stretch, leading the Bills to wins in their last five games. In those games he has 13 TD passes and just 2 INTs. He’s also ran for three TDs in those games, as his ability to scramble can give defenses fits. And his connection with Stefon Diggs has become one of the most dangerous combos in all of football.
The Bills are peaking on both sides of the ball at just the right time of the season and unlike in their past two playoff appearances this team looks like it can do some special things in the postseason.
And all of that starts with their star QB, who has been leading the way all year and should be the MVP.
