Alex Albon has revealed that it was Franz Tost who gave him the best advice of his F1 career – “Don’t give a f***.” The Thai-British driver spent half of his rookie season working with the legendary team principal, who rertired after the 2023 season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Albon and Tost’s time together was short but fruitful as he scored points on five occasions under the experienced Austrian’s watch before making what transpired to be a premature jump into the Red Bull team to replace the outgoing Pierre Gasly.
Tost has been credited with laying the foundations and providing guidance for some of the strongest talents on the F1 grid. He worked closely with both Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen during the early stages of their careers, setting them up for success before they went on to earn a collective seven Drivers’ Championship titles for Red Bull.
Yuki Tsunoda was keen to express his gratitude towards Tost after his final race in F1 in Abu Dhabi, while the likes of Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz have also worked alongside him for the Faenza-based outfit.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Albon revealed: “The best piece of advice I got given, which was at the start of my Formula One career, was from a team boss called Franz Tost. At the time the team was called Toro Rosso. He’s an elder man but he’s gone through it from the ground up.”
Discussing his exchange with Tost, he explained: “He was talking to me about Formula One – I was a rookie, obviously – and he said ‘Alex, if there’s one thing you need to learn about Formula One, it’s don’t give a f***.’

“It doesn’t sound that deep but it’s so true and I didn’t really understand it until I went through the tough times, and that’s why we talk about this putting yourself first and being selfish… that’s when it really started to, for me, to understand what he meant.
“Because at the time it was ‘I don’t really give a f***’, but actually I did and I think I cared too much at the beginning. It’s strange for a team boss to say that, because at the end of the day, he wants you to care about the team, he wants you to care about the image of the team. But he wasn’t like that. He said ‘You put yourself first’ and then that’s it.”
