F1 Russian Grand Prix qualifying LIVE: Lewis Hamilton vying for Michael Schumacher record

Express Sport brings you all the latest from qualifying at the Russian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton looks to give himself the best chance of equalling Michael Schumacher’s race wins records by securing pole position in Sochi.

Valtteri Bottas was the quickest in both of Fridays’ practice sessions but Hamilton edged ahead of his Mercedes team-mate in FP3 this morning.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen is expected to be the Silver Arrows’ closest challenger, quite a bit ahead of the rest of the field.

This weekend could be a moment’s occasion as he can equal Schumacher’s 91 F1 race wins with victory in Sochi.

Ferrari ace Sebastian Vettel admitted he had mixed emotions about the legendary German’s records being broken.

“Obviously we’ve spent a lot of years now together here [himself and Hamilton],” he told Sky Sports.

“He will never be Michael to me, so that’s why a bit mixed in terms of emotions.

“It’s sad to see that he will break the record, which I’m quite sure [he will], because in my head it belongs to Michael.

“But even after, it still sort of belongs to Michael.

“On the other hand, I’m very happy for him because he deserves [it]. You don’t win this amount of races by chance, so very happy for him.”

But Schumacher’s son Mick, who races in F2, has revealed what his father would think about Hamilton’s efforts.

“One sentence my dad always used to say was records are there to be broken,” said the 21-year-old.

“It’s everybody’s aim in the sport to do that. I think Lewis had a very, very good run – he had a very consecutive and positive run.”

Hamilton said: “It’s been the best eight years of my life but there was still a lot of success before that with McLaren and that was a great period of my life also – a lot of learning, a lot of success together, which was awesome.”
