Red Bull isn’t just an energy drinks company and an F1 team. It is working on a variety of other projects in other sports and beyond.
F1 team principal Christian Horner has detailed the work being undertaken by Red Bull’s Advanced Technologies, which even includes the building of a submarine. It is also working closely with Olympic cycling legend Chris Hoy on producing high-quality bike components while also being involved in the America’s Cup sailing event.
“We did the aeroscreen for the IndyCar championship [the American series’ version of F1’s halo device]. We’re heavily involved in the America’s Cup. We are designing a three-man submarine,” Horner told F1's Beyond The Grid podcast.

“We’re working with KTM in MotoGP with their aerodynamic studies. Chris Hoy, we’ve got a great project going with him on bicycle components. So we’ve got a great list of customers that Advanced Technologies are working with.”
Headed by legendary F1 designed Adrian Newey, Red Bull is also producing a hypercar, the RB17.
“The biggest project within that [Advanced Technologies] is the RB17,” added Horner. “That’s taking everything Adrian has done in his entire career and throwing it into the ultimate track car, which has got insane levels of performance, and that’s tremendously exciting for the whole company.”
Given Red Bull’s work with IndyCar in producing the aeroscreen, Horner was asked if the team would consider racing in categories outside F1, like the leading US-based series.

“IndyCar teams are pretty specialist,” he said. “They’re like Formula 2 teams where they run a customer car. It wouldn’t make a great deal of sense for us to get involved in.”
Red Bull has been trying to bring IndyCar star Colton Herta into their programme by placing him at sister team AlphaTauri for 2023. However, Herta’s lack of the required number of superlicence points means that move is off.
On Red Bull’s desire to bring an American into their stable, Horner said: “America is a huge market and we’re seeing that growth in the sport. It would be great to give arguably the best current American driver an opportunity in Formula 1.
“Unfortunately the licencing restrictions will probably prevent that from happening. We’ll have to respect the FIA’s stance on that, but it’s definitely something that needs looking at because it shouldn’t be so hard for drivers to transition from America’s premier series into Formula 1.”
