Yuki Tsunoda fumes at Max Verstappen as Red Bull star faces Singapore penalty

Yuki Tsunoda’s Q2 lap was ruined by Red Bull star Max Verstappen on Saturday evening as the AlphaTauri driver was denied the chance to get himself into the final part of qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Japanese driver was heading into a flying lap when he closed up to the back of Verstappen in the Red Bull, who was going slowly on the racing line.

Verstappen failed to get out of the way of Tsunoda, ruining his lap and leaving the 23-year-old furious with the reigning world champion. As a result of the incident, Verstappen has been noted and could be investigated by the stewards after the session.

Speaking about the impeding incident, Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle said: “I’ll be amazed if Max doesn’t take a penalty for that with Tsunoda.

“Max isn’t happy and the car isn’t working for him, it just seems everything else is falling apart here.” Unfortunately for Verstappen, things went on to get even worse.

A messy final run left the Dutchman scrapping to make up lap time. He crossed the line and only improved to go tenth fastest, later being bumped into the elimination zone by AlphaTauri stand-in Liam Lawson.

With Verstappen eliminated for the first time this season, Red Bull’s misery was compounded after Sergio Perez was sent into a spin after running wide on his final flying lap.

When the session came to an end, both Red Bull drivers were eliminated for the first time in 2023, while Tsunoda, who was caught up in that blocking incident with Verstappen, was also eliminated.

Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon were the other two drivers who failed to scrape their way out of the bottom five when the chequered flag waved.

Red Bull will now face a nervous wait as they look to avoid further misery. Verstappen is under investigation for two separate incidents with a verdict to be given after the qualifying session ends.
