Record falls, star ‘blows it’ in Bathurst 1000 Top 10 Shootout

Cameron Waters has sizzled in the Bathurst 1000 Top 10 Shootout to snatch pole position for Sunday’s race at Mt Panorama.

Waters smashed the quickest shootout time ever seen at the mountain in a lap described by Supercars legend Mark Skaife as “life-changing” for the 26-year-old.

Waters was quickest in the shootout and will share the front row with Scott McLaughlin. The Kiwi series champion was blown away to finish more than 0.4 seconds behind Waters.

Lee Holdsworth, who was fastest in Friday’s qualifying session, secured P6.

Waters lap of 2.03.559 smashed Chaz Mostert’s previous shootout lap record by 0.2 seconds.

“This is a life-changing moment for Cam Waters,” Skaife said.

Earlier, Red Bull champion Jamie Whincup came unstuck at the bottom of Conrod Straight in a brakes lock-up that saw him finish last in the shootout.

Mark Skaife said Whincup had “blown it” after he missed the apex turning into the Cutting.

Whincup was — at the time of his run — on track to set the fastest time of the Shootout — but his lock-up and trip over the grass through the Cutting cost him more than two seconds.

Whincup will star P10 after he had been quicker than Chaz Mostert at the time of his blunder.

“He’ll be very frustrated with that,” Skaife said.

Whincup said after the lap: “I can’t get that one back unfortunately. Just have to give it even more tomorrow”.
