Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed he lavished £200,000 on a super-car after a string of ‘chavvy’ purchases at the start of his playing career.
The former striker spent his entire career at boyhood club Aston Villa, where he broke through as a teenager. Signing his first professional contract was a big deal for Agbonlahor, who marked his new-found wealth by splashing the cash on clothes for himself and his mates.
“I was quite chavvy back then and remember going with my best friend to the Lacoste shop,” Agbonlahor, now a radio pundit, said on talkSPORT.
“They used to do these tracksuits with the collars. Me and my friend bought it in three colours. I bought my friend a pair of trainers, brought myself a few pairs of Nike TNs.

“I just remember when the money hit my account with the sign-on fee from that contract. I just thought 'shopping time'.
“Then I got a new car. I remember getting a Golf, [I] bought it off my friend’s dad. It was a bit like 'wow', going from £80-a-week, which was my scholarship deal for two years, to then a grand-and-a-half. I was like 'wow', what a change.”

The purchases eventually became more extravagant as he upgraded his motor, although he didn’t keep it for long.
“I think it was a Lamborghini Aventador," he recalled. "I remember scaring my little daughter with it [because It was so fast]. I think she was probably three or four, bless her. I was scaring her, she was crying in the car.
