After a bright start at the Allianz Arena, Onana was at fault with Leroy Sane’s shot squirming underneath him to give the hosts the lead after 28 minutes.
After exchanging passes with Harry Kane, the former Manchester City star let fly with a shot that was straight at the Cameroon international who failed to make what should have been a straight forward save.
After a second Bayern goal through Serge Gnabry, United responded in the second-half with Rasmus Hojlund scoring his first goal for the club.
Harry Kane restored the two-goal lead shortly after and while United scored late on twice through Casemiro, Bayern remained in control of the Champions League group opener, sealing a 4-3 win.
Onana put himself up for media duty after a difficult evening in Germany and admitted United were unable to stay in the game because of his mistake.
‘It is difficult. We started very good but after my mistake we lost control of the game,’ Onana told TNT Sport.
‘It is frustrating for us, for me especially because I am the one who let the team down.
‘The team was good, we didn’t win this game because of me. we have to move forward. this is what it is like as a goalkeeper.’
Onana, who arrived at Old Trafford this summer in a £47million deal from Inter Milan as a long-term replacement for David de Gea, admitted Wednesday was one of his ‘worst games’ since joining the club.
‘I have a lot to prove,’ he said. ‘My start in Manchester hasn’t been so good, not how I want. This was one of my worst games. We have big ambition.
‘It’s a tough time. We have to be together and work hard.’
