Arsenal backed to complete ‘the best bit of business in many years’ in next few days

Arsenal will have completed their best piece of business in “many years” once Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang puts pen to paper on a new contract, according to former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has stated news on Aubameyang’s renewal should be made public in the next few days. The Gunners captain scored a fine goal in the 3-0 opening day win over newly-promoted Fulham on Saturday.

Aubameyang’s new contract has been teased for a while now, with Arteta maintaining confidence since he was first asked about it last season.

The Gabon star was instrumental in the club’s FA Cup triumph last term, scoring a brace in both the semi-final and final.

His goal against Fulham was his 72nd in Arsenal colours in just his 111th appearance in all competitions.

And Morrison says it cannot be overstated how important it is for the 31-year-old to commit his future to the club.

“When Arsenal tie him down, it’s the best bit of business that Arsenal have done for many years,” Morrison said on Sky Sports News.

Aubameyang’s goal at Craven Cottage has turned into a trademark for the forward, cutting in from the left and curling an unstoppable effort into the far top corner.

And Morrison compared the finish to that of Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer Thierry Henry.

“Let me tell you something, see this goal, they used to call it ‘the Thierry Henry’,” he added.

“I’m not calling it ‘the Thierry Henry’ anymore, I’m calling it ‘the Aubameyang’ because I saw him do it in the Community Shield against Liverpool.

“This is a fantastic finish. He had Kieran Tierney on his outside, he could have rolled in [Ainsley] Maitland-Niles, he said: ‘Nah, I want a piece of this action this afternoon’ and it is a fantastic finish.

“Willian picks him out, his touch, you don’t know which way to show him because as you saw in the cup final, [Kurt] Zouma, can he show him inside?

“No, because he can go back outside on his left foot and he can finish [with his] left foot. He’s a superb individual.”

Arteta was once again asked about Aubameyang’s future following the victory over their London rivals.

“I am really positive that we are going to get it done,” he told BT Sport.

“Hopefully in the next few days we can get some news.”
