Arsenal ‘could finalise exit deal’ with Newcastle after Community Shield clash

Arsenal defender Rob Holding is set to join Newcastle on loan until the end of the season.

Mikel Arteta is plotting a defensive shakeup at the Emirates this summer, with a £27million deal for Lille centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

William Saliba has also returned from his loan spell at St-Etienne, while Pablo Mari has joined the club on a permanent basis following his loan in the second half of last season.

As a result, Holding has been deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates this term, meaning he is poised to seal a season-long loan move to Newcastle.

According to The Athletic , Steve Bruce’s side are leading the race to sign him in the summer transfer window.

It is believed the two clubs will finalise a deal after Arsenal’s Community Shield clash with Liverpool on Saturday, as injuries and quarantine requirements have left Arteta short of centre-backs at Wembley.

Shkodran Mustafi, Mari and Calum Chambers are all out injured four the Gunners, while Sokratis is currently in quarantine.

Arteta therefore needed Holding to start against the Premier League champions, meaning his loan switch to St James’ Park is likely to be sorted next week.

Newcastle also need to agree personal terms with the 24-year-old, who has only made 18 league appearances over the last two seasons due to injury problems.

Bruce is determined to bolster his squad on Tyneside this summer, but he has a limited budget after seeing the club’s proposed Saudi-led takeover fall through.

The Magpies are also understood to be targeting a new striker, with Dwight Gayle set to spend between three and four months out injured.

Arsenal are expected to confirm the signing of Gabriel imminently, beating Premier League rivals Manchester United to the 22-year-old’s signature.

Reports suggest he will put pen to paper on a five-year deal in north London to become Arteta’s second major signing of the summer.
