Arsenal face problem trying to complete signing of Emiliano Martinez replacement

Arsenal have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, with Bees boss Thomas Frank adamant the Spaniard will not be leaving under any circumstances. Raya is apparently desperate to force through a move to the Emirates, with Arsenal eyeing him as a replacement for Emiliano Martinez.

Arsenal could be forced to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a new backup goalkeeper.

Martinez looks set to leave, with Aston Villa eyeing a £20million bid for the Argentine.

The 27-year-old wants first-team football, but knows he is unlikely to unseat Bernd Leno in goal at the Emirates.

Arsenal are reluctant to let him leave, but have accepted they may have to move him on this summer.

They want Brentford’s Raya as a replacement, after the Spaniard had a solid debut season for the Bees.

The 24-year-old played every minute of the west London side’s Championship campaign last year and was impressive, but was criticised for a crucial error leading to Fulham’s opening goal in the play-off final last month.

Arsenal have seen a £10m bid rejected already this window, with Brentford reluctant to let him leave the club.

And Frank confirmed in a press conference on Friday that the Spanish ace would be staying at the club regardless of any bids coming in, as the club has already decided their transfer policy regarding players moving on.

Ollie Watkins left for Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £33m last week, and Said Benrahma is expected to depart once a club meets Brentford’s £25m asking price.

But other than that, Frank is adamant that no other players will leave.

“I said one week ago that if the price is right for Ollie Watkins or Said Benrahma, we are open, because that’s the way football works,” the boss said.

“The rest are not for sale.”

When asked to clarify his position on Raya specifically, he responded bluntly and reiterated that the goalkeeper would not be leaving.

He said: “I would like to repeat myself.

“If the price is right for Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, then they are for sale.
