Arsenal looking to strengthen their defence with Shakhtar Donetsk’s Mykola Matviyenko as Ukraine international’s agent confirms approach from Premier League club

Arsenal are looking to Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko to shore up their leaky back four after the Ukrainian’s agent confirmed an approach from the Premier League club. 

New boss Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in alternative defensive options before the close of the January transfer window after Calum Chambers’ season-ending injury as well as questionable performances from David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi.

And now it is claimed that the north London club have commenced negotiations with Ukraine side Shakhtar over their 23-year-old defender’s availability.

The 23-year-old has been at Shakhtar has whole career and is a target of Manchester City

‘Recently, my colleagues and I have been constantly in contact with representatives of the Arsenal, and have had meetings,’ Matviyenko’s agent, Yuriy Danchenko, told Ukrainian media, as per The Metro.

‘The Gunners’ hierarchy have already contacted [Shakhtar], and we hope that these negotiations will succeed.’ 

Ukrainian international Matviyenko has been at Shakhtar his whole career, having progressed through the club’s academy before making his first team debut in 2015.

The left-footed centre back has been a long term target for Manchester City having played against them during this season’s Champions League group stage.
