Arsenal’s Ramsdale advised against joining Chelsea if Pochettino ‘admits defeat’

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been advised against joining Chelsea if he cannot win back his No 1 spot. Steve McManaman says the current scrutiny on the Stamford Bridge club would put players off making that move.

Ramsdale has fallen behind summer signing David Raya at Arsenal. He lost his place in the first game back after the recent international break and remained on the bench for the Gunners’ Champions League opener against PSV Eindhoven and north London derby clash against Tottenham.

He had started 52 Premier League matches in a row for Arsenal before he was dropped at Everton. Ramsdale was named in the PFA Team of the Year last season but now has to fight to regain Mikel Arteta’s faith.

Ramsdale only signed a new contract earlier this year to keep him at the Emirates until 2026, with the option of another 12 months. But his recent exclusion has seen him linked with a move away.

The Mail claims that Chelsea are among the clubs keeping an eye on Ramsdale’s situation. McManaman expects teams will have already registered their interest in the player.

The former Liverpool star told Betfred: “Clubs will certainly be monitoring Aaron’s situation at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta clearly wants quality in reserve, so I will be very surprised if he allows Aaron to leave the club, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal have already been contacted by other clubs that are interested in his signature because Aaron wants to play every single week and he wants to play for England with Euro 2024 on the horizon.”

However, McManaman does not think Chelsea would be the right destination. The Blues sold Edouard Mendy in the summer and loaned out Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mauricio Pochettino brought in Robert Sanchez from Brighton and he has started every game this season. McManaman cannot see Pochettino “admitting defeat” on Sanchez just yet.

However, he says Ramsdale should ignore Chelsea’s interest if he does. McManaman added: “Could he move to Chelsea? I have no idea what’s going on at Chelsea to be honest.

“Kepa Arrizabalaga has already gone to Real Madrid, Edouard Mendy has moved to Saudi Arabia and then they brought Robert Sanchez in, so I’d be very surprised if they admitted defeat so suddenly and tried to bring Aaron Ramsdale to Stamford Bridge and play him over Sanchez.

“I don’t believe that Arsenal would allow him to go to Chelsea unless they offered them an extortionate amount of money, which is something they’ve done with multiple players they’ve signed in recent times. If you’re Aaron, you probably wouldn’t want to go anywhere near Chelsea at this moment in time because you don’t know what you’re going to get.

“He’s probably best just staying where he is now, letting everything calm down, biding his time and then he can re-evaluate the situation in a month or two once he’s had the chance to talk with Gareth Southgate.”
