Barcelona ‘confident’ in double transfer raid for Liverpool star and Man Utd flop

Man Utd: Solskjaer previews upcoming Liverpool clash

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is reportedly confident he will be able to complete deals for Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay this summer. The La Liga giants are in the midst of their presidential elections, with a winner to be announced by the end of the month.

That has thrown potential January transfer plans up in the air, with Barcelona trailing leaders Atletico Madrid by seven points – having played two games more.

Koeman would like additional signings this month, but is willing to accept the majority of their rebuild may come at the end of the season.

Mundo Deportivo report that the Dutchman has his eyes on three free agents, including Liverpool star Wijnaldum.

The 30-year-old has just months left on his deal at Anfield and is free to discuss a move with a clubs abroad, ahead of a potential pre-contract agreement.

The champions hope to keep the Netherlands international and are believed to have made more than one offer, with talks at a standstill.

Last month, when quizzed on the talks, he said: “I already said in my previous interview, I don’t talk about my contract situation, I talk about the game.

“The club talk about my contract. There’s a connection, there was a connection from the first moment I came here, the supporters supported me a lot, but it’s not for me to talk about.”

Wijnaldum is understood to be mulling over the latest proposal and will not open talks with other clubs until it is decided.

However, Mundo Deportivo claim Koeman is confident he will be able to sign him in the summer.

The Barca boss confirmed he was on their list in the summer, with the financial situation altering their plans.

In October, he said: “Our interest in Wijnaldum was separate [to Lionel Messi’s future]. I think our squad could use some depth, especially when we haven’t got the ball.

“Gini has a great sense of space, he can get to the goal fantastically well from midfield, he could really add something to the team.

“But the financial situation was known by the club, his position was ultimately less of a priority than, for example, the right-back or the striker position.”

As well as Wijnaldum, Koeman is eyeing former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay, who is expected to leave Lyon at the end of his contract.

“We wanted Memphis because he is a great player and because he has qualities that we lacked in my opinion: especially depth in our attack,” Koeman added.

“[Trying to sign him in January] is certainly a possibility, yes. I will try, because I would like to have him here. But I cannot estimate now what the financial situation of the club is like in January.”
