Bobby Thomas earned Burnley a narrow 1-0 victory over Championship new boys Blackpool in a Lancashire pre-season derby.

The 20-year-old defender rose highest to head home Ashley Westwood’s corner in the 76th minute to make it four wins in four pre-season games for Sean Dyche’s men.

The Premier League side controlled the game for large periods and limited their opponents to half chances in the second period.

Burnley thought they had taken the lead in the 53rd minute when Erik Pieters slid in Ashley Barnes, who side-footed home from close range, but the striker was flagged offside.

Wayne Hennessey was given his debut after joining the club on a free transfer from Crystal Palace earlier this month.

The goalkeeper had little to do until the end of the first half when he made a decent stop to deny Demetri Mitchell.

As many as 1,000 Burnley fans made the short trip to Bloomfield Road and they were given something to cheer 14 minutes from time when Thomas scored his first senior goal for the club.

Westwood’s corner went deep to the far post and Thomas powered his header into the back of the net.

Blackpool pushed for an equaliser but the visitors saw the game out to make it two wins in four days.

Dyche’s men begin their new season against Brighton on August 14 while Blackpool kick off their Championship campaign against Bristol City on August 7.
