Chelsea are 'ABOVE Barcelona and Real Madrid,' insists Glenn Hoddle

Chelsea are ‘ABOVE Barcelona and Real Madrid’ and should ‘at least be looking to reach the Champions League semi-final,’ insists Glenn Hoddle after Lampard’s men hammer Sevilla to cruise through their group

  • Chelsea have progressed to the Champions League knockout rounds
  • They secured their place in the next stage with a thumping 4-0 win at Sevilla
  • Glenn Hoddle believes Chelsea can go on to at least reach the semi-final
  • He said he rates Frank Lampard’s men more than Barcelona and Real Madrid’s

Chelsea have a superior team to Barcelona and Real Madrid and should be setting themselves a minimum goal of reaching the semi-finals in the Champions League.

That is the opinion of Glenn Hoddle, who was effusive in his praise for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea after they ruthlessly swept aside Sevilla to seal their spot as winners of Group E.

Barcelona are also already through to the knockout stages after continuing their perfect record in the groups against Ferencvaros while Real Madrid are in huge trouble and need to beat Borussia Monchengladbach or for results to fall their way in the last round of games.

Olivier Giroud was the star of the show for Chelsea on Wednesday night as he scored all four goals in a comfortable victory – and on this showing Hoddle is convinced that Lampard’s men can go deep into the competition.

He told BT Sport: ‘Looking at the teams that are there, obviously Liverpool and Manchester City, they are going to be there and or there abouts.

‘For City it’s their No 1 priority whether they tell you that or not, they want to win the Champions League.

‘You can’t look past Bayern Munich because they are so powerful but you have got to put Chelsea up there. For me at this moment, they are above Barcelona and above Real Madrid.

‘They are two massive clubs but Chelsea’s team is better than theirs.

‘In this moment in time I think they have got to be looking at at least the semi-final and you get to a semi-final, anything can happen.

‘And they have international players who are going to get better as the season goes and if the crowds are full and we are back to full houses – we haven’t seen this Chelsea side inspired by a crowd and the bigger the occasion the better the best players are.

‘There is more to come from Chelsea.’

Hoddle’s fellow BT Sport pundit and former Blues midfielder Joe Cole was equally impressed with how Lampard’s men eased past a well-organised Sevilla team.

Cole also agreed with Hoddle that Chelsea are capable of reaching the latter stages of the Champions League and sees them as genuine contenders this season.

He added: ‘There’s a fearlessness about them. Second youngest squad in the Premier League, Chelsea. And those names you see, Glenn’s right.

‘You might think: ‘Ah, Juventus are still there and so are Barcelona,’ but if you look at each club individually at the moment, Juventus are in a bit of disarray, Barcelona’s a mess, Real Madrid, the manager is hanging on in there.

‘It’s (Champions League) open to anyone, Manchester City, Liverpool. We could even have a situation where all four English teams are in the last four.

‘I look at those teams that are through already and none of them scare me. And I think Chelsea are right up there with the form teams, 15 games unbeaten and it’s looking rosy for them right now.’
