Chelsea are not signing Edouard Mendy to become the club’s No 1, according to transfer expert Ian McGarry. Rennes goalkeeper Mendy looks set to become Chelsea’s seventh signing in the summer window. The 28-year-old is set to cost a fee of around £18m.
Frank Lampard dropped Kepa Arrizabalaga on two occasions last season from the Premier League side.
Reports had claimed the Chelsea head coach had lost faith in Arrizabalaga and wanted to sign a replacement.
But selling the world’s most expensive goalkeeper of all time looks to be an impossible task for Chelsea right now.
And McGarry says Mendy is being brought in to challenge Arrizabalaga and get him back playing to his best.

“The idea is that Mendy will not necessarily replace Kepa as the first-choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge but instead will provide a high level of competition to the Spain goalkeeper and indeed hopefully re-kickstart his Chelsea career,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.
“We reported in May that [Petr] Cech believed that Kepa still had a future at Chelsea and that indeed there were some off-field problems which, if resolved, could see him better himself in terms of his attitude and concentration and ability to perform at the highest level again.

“Recruiting Mendy is seen as a way of hopefully, in Chelsea’s case and in Frank Lampard’s case, of getting Kepa back to the keeper that they paid £71m for from Athletic Bilbao.”
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes Mendy would be a better option than Arrizabalaga.

“He’s a very good goalkeeper,” Leboeuf said on ESPN FC.
“I followed him when he was playing for Reims and he signed for Rennes after that.
“I know Petr Cech is very close to Rennes, playing two years there just before coming to Chelsea.
“I guess he has some people that he knows in the dressing room and at the club to know that Edouard Mendy is really a fantastic goalkeeper.
“I think he will serve better than Kepa Arrizabalaga did for the years he’s been at Chelsea and the amount of money Chelsea paid.
“Now the question mark will be what’s going to happen to Kepa if Mendy comes to Chelsea and plays in goal.”
