Chelsea injury news: Latest updates on Mendy, Pulisic and Werner ahead of Southampton

Chelsea have suffered a number of setbacks over the international break with Edouard Mendy reporting home early from his duties. However, Christian Pulsiic and Hakim Ziyech have fully recovered from their injuries, and could start against Southampton this weekend.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will be hoping to have a number of key players fit in time for this weekend’s clash with Southampton.

The Blues host the Saints at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, following a busy international break for much of the squad.

Their plight is set to be boosted by the return of Christian Pulisic, but there have also been a number of setbacks to players while representing their country.

Here’s the latest update from the injury room at Chelsea.

Edouard Mendy

Mendy made his debut in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, but could now face a spell on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury during training on international duty with Senegal.

The 28-year-old has returned to the Blues to undergo further tests, and is expected to be out for around 10 days, meaning he’ll miss the game with Southampton.

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell missed England’s 2-1 win over Belgium after linking up with the national team late.

Gareth Southgate insisted that his absence was due to a non-Covid related illness, and he is set to feature on Wednesday against Denmark.

That means he should be fine to face Southampton at the weekend.

Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech played just over half an hour for Morocco last Friday evening, and has now returned to Chelsea due to an agreement.

The winger is still yet to make his debut for the club, but is in line to do so this weekend after recovering from the knee injury he sustained during a pre-season friendly against Brighton.

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic made his first appearance this term with a seven minute cameo in the 4-0 win over Palace just before the break.

The American winger is expected to start against Southampton after fully recovering from hamstring injury which has kept him out since last season.

Timo Werner

Werner missed Germany’s 3-3 draw with Turkey last Wednesday and was then left out of the squad to face Ukraine on Saturday.

Little more is known about Werner’s current situation, but his health will be assessed ahead of the Southampton clash.
