Chelsea schedule Romelu Lukaku talks as Inter Milan ‘conditions’ emerge

Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard previews the Newcastle game

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is set for a round of important transfer talks after the Champions League final, with Inter Milan keen to get down to the nitty gritty over the future of Romelu Lukaku, who could yet be given another chance by incoming Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Lukaku disappointed at Stamford Bridge last season following a £97.5million move from the Nerazzurri. He was shipped back to Italy last summer, although the financial aspects of the situation made a loan deal the only feasible option.

Despite previously looking as though there was no way back for the Belgian in west London, Pochettino is reportedly exploring the possibility of pushing for a return. Chelsea have recently lacked a cutting edge up top, with only three teams scoring fewer than their 37 goals in the Premier League this season.

New light has been shed on the situation by Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim that Boehly and co are set for talks to resolve the situation immediately after the Champions League final on June 10.

Lukaku could start the showdown in Istanbul up top for Inter when they take on Manchester City, although it may prove to be his last act for the club if Chelsea lure him back to England.

Despite the striker reportedly wanting to stay, Inter finding the money to meet the Blues’ £60million price tag is described as ‘unthinkable’. With a permanent move seemingly off the cards, three conditions will need to be met for another loan arrangement to go through.

For one, the Nerazzurri will need to qualify for the Champions League, which they are on course to do as Simone Inzaghi’s side currently sit third in Serie A. Secondly, Lukaku must be open to the possibility of lowering his salary.

The 30-year-old, who is thought to be on a massive £325,000 a week at Stamford Bridge, is supposedly willing to negotiate on that front. Finally, Chelsea will have to accept a cheaper loan fee than the one they demanded 12 months ago.

For most of this campaign, it looked as if Lukaku would have no future at Inter as he failed to rediscover the form he showed during his first stint at the San Siro. Injuries also hampered his progress, and he has only started 17 Serie A games in 2022/23.

But an upturn in form over the past few weeks has taken his tally to 14 goal contributions this term, persuading Inter to explore their options this summer with Lukaku keen to draw a line under his ill-fated Chelsea return.
