Chelsea urged to sell N’Golo Kante to fund Declan Rice transfer in ‘limited’ claim

Chelsea have been urged to go all-out in an attempt to try and sign Declan Rice from West Ham this January, even if it means selling N’Golo Kante in the process. Frank Lampard was eager to sign the 21-year-old this summer, but his asking price was deemed a step too far for the Blues.

Chelsea were the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer, forking out nearly £250million on new players.

The Blues strengthened significantly throughout the side, with a host of new attackers joining along with defenders Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

However, they missed out on one of Lampard’s top targets, having failed to convince West Ham to lower their asking price for Rice.

Lampard apparently wanted to play the 21-year-old in the middle of a three-man defence along with Thiago Silva and a third central defender.

The Blues were told they would have to fork out £73m to sign Rice, a fee which the club deemed too much after their £250m spending spree.

Chelsea were believed to be ready to sell players in order to fund the move, with Jorginho said to be one of the players up for sale.

The Blues were also ready to listen to offers for Kante, with Chelsea viewing him as a player they could recoup a significant amount of money for in order to go after Rice.

Inter Milan were apparently interested, but decided against making a bid late in the window.

Adrian Durham explained on talkSPORT that Rice would be a big upgrade on Kante if Chelsea decided to sell the Frenchman.

He claimed that Kante, 29, won’t be able to offer as much in the long run as Rice would be able to.

“They’ve been thinking about bringing in Declan Rice for a long, long time,” Durham said.

“If you sell Kante and bring in Rice, It’s a big upgrade.

“This is someone who can do Kante’s job, and go on the attack and use the ball quickly.

“Maybe not the Kante from yesteryear.

“What I’m looking at is a top side trying to do stuff in Europe and in the Premier League as well.

“Is Kante too limited? Rice does more than Kante – that’s what I’m saying.”
