Chelsea's Mason Mount says he CAN play with Jack Grealish for England

Chelsea starlet Mason Mount insists he CAN play alongside Jack Grealish for England and says he shares a ‘connection’ with Aston Villa captain

  • Mason Mount says he gets on ‘very well’ with Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish
  • Both players have impressed for England during the international break
  • The two midfielders play a similar role but Mount says they fit in the same team
  • He believes they have a ‘connection’ and are determined to play together

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount believes he and Jack Grealish can line up together in the same England team, despite playing in similar positions.

Mount was the hero for the Three Lions on Sunday night as his heavily deflected strike sealed a 2-1 win over Belgium to put Gareth Southgate’s men top of Group 2 in the Nations League.

Grealish was an unused substitute for that game, but was man of the match in last week’s 3-0 friendly win against Wales – earning comparisons to England legend Paul Gascoigne in some quarters. Both started on the right of the front three for the team, leading to suggestions only one of them can fit into the starting XI.

Southgate will have a decision on his hands ahead of England’s clash with Denmark on Wednesday, but Mount believes the pair are more than capable of featuring together thanks to their special ‘connection’.

‘I love watching him [Grealish] play as well. He’s brilliant to be around,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘Obviously we all know what he can do, what a brilliant player he is.

‘I get on very well with Jack. He’s a brilliant player and, yes, we always want to play together. We have such a strong group with loads of top, top players. You always want to play with the best and when you come away with England you’re doing that.

‘It means so much to come away and play with the likes of Jack and the top, top players in the group.’

Mount says the two players share a special ‘connection’ that can only benefit the team in future

He admitted it was sometimes difficult for players to come together and gel on the international stage but said building a relationship like the one he shares with Grealish can only benefit England.

‘You’re learning all the time,’ he added. ‘Sometimes when you come away you don’t really know what kind of moves they make on the ball.

‘You have to kind of learn about the players while you’re away training. You don’t get much time, but when you’re playing the games you kind of have that connection and I think me and Jack do definitely have that.

‘You always want to play with the best players, win a lot of games as a group. We want to win things, we’re definitely on that path to keep working hard and to get better and better.’

Grealish has enjoyed a great start to the season with both club and country, netting three goals and providing three assists in the league for Villa, while his eye-catching assist against Wales won many plaudits.

Mount has had a mixed start to the campaign for Chelsea but bagged the winner against the Belgians, a team ranked No 1 in the world, with pundit Jamie Redknapp saying he had the potential to become as good as Kevin De Bruyne.

But the 21-year-old admitted he has a fair way to go to reach the Man City star’s level. ‘Seeing De Bruyne up close and personal, there’s a lot I need to do to improve my game to get anywhere near him,’ he said.
