He will temporarily try to stop celebrating as he bids to nullify Manchester City striker and fellow Argentina hero Julian Alvarez today.

Tough-tackling Romero has regained his form after a testing adjustment period following his country’s epic victory over France, in Qatar, but it has not been easy to move on from the events of last December.

‘Only now, a few weeks later, I realise that what we achieved is something incredible,’ he said.

‘I watch the World Cup Final game every day.

Cristian Romero has revealed that he watches Argentina’s World Cup triumph back every day

The 24-year-old played in every game as La Albiceleste claimed the famous trophy in Qatar

‘I get excited with the celebrations in Argentina, the way the people treat us was extraordinary.

‘I think the group deserved to win the World Cup. We have a fantastic group because we always pushed forward together.’

In the aftermath, downtown Buenos Aires descended into chaos as Argentina’s heroes were welcomed home.

Five years earlier, at 18, Romero had thought about calling time on his fledgling career.

Fast forward half a decade and he had lived his greatest footballing experience, alongside the game’s greatest-ever player.

‘At the beginning, it was tough because I was tired mentally,’ he added.

‘The World Cup required a lot of mental focus like I never experienced before.’

In a season like no other, Romero was one of many World Cup stars thrust straight back into the demands of the Premier League and admitted readjusting had its difficulties mentally.

Romero revealed that he had considered quitting football as a teenager before joining Genoa

But the defender revealed that he is loving life at Spurs since joining the club permanently last summer

Now he is back in the moment and ready to face the Premier League champions.

Speaking to Paramount+ Mexico, he added: ‘I didn’t have time for many holidays, but I love these football moments.

‘I love playing football and I was counting the hours to come back here with my club, to play again with my teammates.

‘The truth is that I’m very happy at the moment. Just to think that five years ago I was thinking of quitting and stopping playing football and now I’m competing in the best league.

‘Being a World Cup Champion for me is the best so I don’t have anything to complain about.’
