Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has plenty of admirers at Manchester United, according to reports. McGinn has been at Villa for three years, but if it were up to United technical director Darren Fletcher and former manager Sir Alex Ferguson he could be plying his trade at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been a regular at Villa since joining the club from Hibernian in 2018, making 111 appearances across all competitions.

He started 37 of Villa’s 38 Premier League games last season, contributing three goals and five assists as Dean Smith’s side finished in 11th place.

McGinn is now concentrating on Scotland’s campaign at Euro 2020, with Steve Clarke’s team in Group D alongside England, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

Although he is a familiar face in the Premier League, the Euros will put McGinn on a bigger stage, with eye-catching performances potentially carrying weight in the transfer market.

One club who will have half an eye on him are United, with The Athletic reporting that although he’s not ‘too high up’ on the club’s shortlist for a new defensive midfielder, he is ‘held in high regard’ by Fletcher.

Fletcher took up the role of technical director in United’s back-room shake-up in March and works alongside director of football negotiations Matt Judge and reports to football director John Murtough.

As a former Scotland international he will know all about McGinn, who signed a new contract in December 2020 to keep him at Villa until 2025.

Transfermarkt values him at £27m, but the Birmingham side are sure to fend off any interest from rival clubs in their player.

United were linked with a transfer for McGinn back in 2019 before Villa slapped a £50m price tag on his head to ward off interest.

That interest was in part down to Ferguson, according to Bobby Jenks, the scout who helped bring McGinn to Villa from Hibernian.

Back then Jenks was convinced that the legendary ex-United boss would use his considerable influence to encourage a move for his compatriot.

“He’s up there with the best-performing midfielders in the division,” Jenks told The Athletic in October 2019. “Wait until he’s had a year at that level and then we can say more.

“What I do know is that Sir Alex Ferguson is wondering why Manchester United let a talented Scottish boy slip through.

“He’ll be keeping a close eye on him that’s for sure and if he continues the way he is, you can bet he’ll be telling his pals at United, too.”

That move from Villa Park to Old Trafford is yet to come to fruition but some strong performances for Scotland this summer could have Fletcher following Ferguson in advocating for his arrival.
