Diogo Dalot hopeful over Man Utd future after impressive Tranmere performance

Diogo Dalot is hoping his impressive display to help Manchester United crush Tranmere in the FA Cup will boost his chances of having a brighter future at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese defender came in from the cold to make a rare start in United's 6-0 thumping of the League One strugglers at Prenton Park in the fourth round.

Dalot even managed his first ever goal for United after notching his side's second from the edge of the penalty area on 13 minutes.

The full-back has endured a miserable time at United since joining them from Porto in a £19m deal in June 2018.

The 20-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the side, making just 18 league appearances including only 13 starts.

Sunday's win was only his fourth start of the season and his first since October, following a string of injuries and loss of form and fitness.

He admits the road to recovery has been tough, but is keen to take his chances when they come along in a bid to prove he can still have a bright future at Old Trafford.

Dalot said: "It was more like a release of something I've been feeling inside me after these three months.

"It’s been a tough journey, but like I said, these kind of things, a win and a goal, make me feel like I'm doing a good job in fighting, working every day and taking the opportunities."

Dalot insists United showed the right mentality to deal with a poor pitch and avoid a huge upset at Prenton Park.

He added: "It was like a big fight. If we didn't go with the right desire and the right mentality we could have made it more difficult.

"Like I said, we did a good job, showed the right mentality and proper fight, we respected the opponent and we got the win."
