Diogo Jota’s ex-coach’s Cristiano Ronaldo prediction for Liverpool star

Diogo Jota’s former coach has detailed the Cristiano Ronaldo prediction he gave the forward that continues to inspire him.

The Portuguese forward has not taken long to find the back of the net at Liverpool, scoring seven goals in his first 11 appearances since signing from Wolves.

While the 23-year-old has been learning from Mohamed Salah, he has been picking up lessons on the international stage from Ronaldo.

The forward is regarded as one of the best players in the world, boasting five Ballon D’Or honours.

But Jorge Simao, who helped develop Liverpool’s new forward at Pacos de Ferreira, has explained how he motivated the youngster to be as good as the former Manchester United man.

Speaking to The Athletic, Jota’s former coach said: “Nobody does what Jota is doing now without having real ambition.

“When he signed for Porto [on loan in 2016], I told a Portuguese website that, for me, Jota would be the successor to Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Obviously, that was quite a big claim to make at that time, because Jota had only played for Pacos and had not had a good time at Atletico Madrid.

“When Jota signed for Liverpool, I sent him a message to congratulate him. He replied, five seconds later, with a link to that old article about him and Ronaldo.

“It was the very first thing he sent! He must have had it bookmarked. Incredible! He hadn’t forgotten.”

Jota spent three seasons at Wolves before moving to Anfield, scoring 44 goals in more than 130 appearances.

And his performances have also seen manager Jurgen Klopp speak highly of the forward.

“We fought really hard to sign him [Jota]. We didn’t need to convince him too much. He’s an exceptional talent," he told the official website.

"He has the speed, physicality, technique, he’s both-footed. He’s much better than I thought he would be and that’s really impressive."

It comes as Simao revealed what Jota did in training to make him think he was a cut above the rest.
