Dublin Dublin labels VAR as 'CRAZY' after Jack Grealish offside check

Dion Dublin labels VAR ‘CRAZY’ after tedious check takes three minutes to deny England equaliser despite Jack Grealish being clearly offside

  • Jack Grealish thought he had pulled England level against North Macedonia

VAR’s offside decision that denied Jack Grealish an England goal in Monday’s European Championship qualifying clash against North Macedonia has been scolded by Dion Dublin over the length it took for review to be completed.

England were denied an equaliser at the start of the second half when Grealish arrived at the back-post to tuck Bukayo Saka’s beautifully-crafted cross past the goalkeeper.

However, while replays quickly showed the naked eye that Grealish was clearly offside, VAR began what quickly turned into a ridiculously long check.

Dublin fumed that the VAR check had taken ‘three minutes’ and scolded match officials for the ‘crazy’ check that ended up denying Gareth Southgate’s side their opening goal.

‘Onside or offside surely you can see that with your eyes. It shouldn’t take this long,’ Dublin said on commentary for Channel 4.

‘Yes it’s offside but it cannot take three minutes to see that is offside. It’s crazy, it  should take 15 seconds. Put the ball down and get on with the game.’

England eventually equalised in the 59th minute just seconds after Harry Kane made his introduction from the substitutes bench.

The Three Lions skipper caused panic inside a crowded penalty box and North Macedonia’s corner was turned into the net by their own defender Jani Atanasov as a result.

However,  the offside call wasn’t the only questionable decision during the match that saw England frustrated by referee calls and opposition play acting.

Referee Filip Glova disallowed the goal after a lengthy VAR check denied England

Rico Lewis gave away a first-half penalty on his senior England debut after being deemed to have fouled Bojan Miovski in the box.

Dublin again criticised VAR’s intervention on that occasion which led to the eventual goal, as did Joe Cole who scolded referee Filip Glova for trying to be the ‘star of the show’.

England dominated but were unable to find a winning goal in Skopje, however, claimed a valuable point to claim top spot in their Euros qualifying group.

The Three Lions advance to the European Championship in Germany next year as a seeded group team having won six matches, drawn twice and finishing qualifying unbeaten.
