England will only win Euros if Kane scores – but it’s the service that’s missing

England will never have a better chance to win a major tournament – but only if Harry Kane starts scoring.

So Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish should keep their places against Germany and Phil Foden could be the one who misses out.

The draw has opened up like a gem for England. When I saw it I really couldn’t believe it.

We don’t have to play the world champions, France, the No 1 ranked team, Belgium, or the best team in the tournament, Italy, until the final.

You couldn’t have planned it any better. It’s extraordinary really. And we have home advantage.

The biggest hurdle on paper comes in the next game, against a team we've had so much bad history with.

I was a bit panicky about playing Germany when I saw them rip Portugal to shreds.

But they were back to being poor again the other night against Hungary. This is not the German juggernaut of the 1990s.

They’ve let five goals in now in three games and they can’t defend. They have a big weakness at the back.

Mats Hummels makes up for his lack of pace with his positional play. But they are just very open. They give you chances.

We have got to have a go at them. I mean, they lost a World Cup qualifier to North Macedonia recently.

Everyone said the last World Cup was our big chance to win. But that Croatia team we played in the semi was better than this Germany one.

We have to have a go at them. And for me that means Saka and Grealish should play.

They got us off our seats against the Czech Republic. How many times can you say that with England recently?

Raheem Sterling has to play because he’s scored all our goals so far, so Foden might be the one to miss out again now.

But we have to play our attacking players, and we have to go out and attack Germany.

We’re not winning the tournament if Kane doesn’t catch fire. But he needs more service.

When I played for England, teams would focus on stopping John Barnes. They would double up on him and stop him playing.

That’s what teams are doing to Kane at the minute. But you know that at any minute he’s capable of suddenly scoring a hat-trick.

He never loses confidence in himself or lets his head drop. It’s why he’s one of the best in the world.

Kane just needs attacking players around him who can make things happen and put the ball in the right places.

We did that against the Czechs – and I don’t see how Gareth Southgate can change it too much now.

Saka and Grealish have played themselves into the team in my opinion.

We were entertaining people in the first half of that game, when those two were getting on the ball and making things happen.

Then he goes and changes it in the second half, brings on Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham, Grealish comes off, and it all fizzles out.

It was almost a free swing by then because we’d already qualified. But we became very defensive.

That has to change against Germany. If you’re playing a team whose big weakness is at the back, you have to go for it.

Belgium must be at peak to stop Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo is a machine and to do what he’s doing at his age is phenomenal.

I’ve not had a can of coke since he took those bottles away. I’m 53 and I’m drinking water from now on if that’s what it does for him!

People say he’s only scoring penalties but you still have to score them. Enough penalties get missed every year.

With him in your team you always have a chance and that’s why Belgium should beware because that game could be a shoot-out.

They will cause Belgium problems. But they do let goals in. There’s been 13 goals in Portugal’s games. I don’t think there’s been 13 SHOTS in England’s.

Belgium need Kevin De Bruyne to be at his peak if they want to do anything. Romelu Lukaku comes alive when he’s on the pitch.

I just worry for Belgium. They remind me of England’s Golden Generation. They keep failing.

They got knocked out of the last Euros by Wales and didn’t even make the final at the last World Cup. They keep wasting their chances.

Wales' spirit could see them go even further

Wales have been brilliant in this tournament and it’s such a shame their fans can’t travel to see them play Denmark.

It would have been an amazing atmosphere in Amsterdam if the Welsh were allowed into the country.

But it doesn’t surprise me they got through the group stage. They have great team spirit and some really good players.

Gareth Bale always seems to give everything in a Wales shirt. Aaron Ramsey can nick a goal. Joe Allen can play. And Daniel James is lightning quick.

Fair play to them for getting into the last 16 – but they could beat Denmark and go even further.

They would cause a lot of teams problems and I like watching them play because of the spirit.

Wales look like a team who all pull together and all fight for each other. It’s just a shame for the fans because Wales don’t get this far too often.

And this generation won’t be around forever. I don’t see too many Bales and Ramseys coming through. You have to make the most of it while you can.
