Ex-Arsenal ace Kieran Gibbs set for career change as MLS contract is cancelled

Former Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs is set for a huge career change after having his MLS contract terminated.

The left-back, 33, has played for David Beckham’s Inter Miami side since his move from West Bromwich Albion in 2021. But he is now set to hang up his boots for a media role – described as an ‘on-air talent’ – with Inter Miami.

Gibbs, who came through the Arsenal academy to play over 200 games for the Gunners, has not yet announced his retirement despite his contract termination.

But MLS journalist Tom Bogert tweeted on Thursday: "Inter Miami defender Kieran Gibbs is transitioning to an on-air talent role with the club. Gibbs and Miami have agreed to a mutual contract termination to take him off the roster."

Gibbs was a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium, having joined the club as a teenager. He overcame injury niggles to contribute to Arsenal’s three FA Cup successes between 2014 and 2017, earning himself 10 England caps in the process.

The defender famously made a decisive clearance off the line in the first of those triumphs to deny Hull City a 3-0 lead. Following his clearance, the Gunners went on to win 3-2, thus ending their trophy drought.

And his former manager Arsene Wenger has since expressed his sadness toward the player leaving for West Brom in 2017, claiming it “hurt more” than losing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool in the same window.

Wenger told Sky Sports: "Overall it's true that with Gibbs [it hurt] more than Chamberlain because he had been educated at Arsenal from the age of 10.

"When he arrived he was a left-winger. I transformed him into a full-back because he was not necessarily rated as a guy who would make it as a left winger but I saw something in him that was very intelligent, with pace, that made me feel he could make it as a left-back."
