Ex-Man Utd man has fans in stitches with Four Lions celebration in Carabao Cup

Demetri Mitchell's reference to cult comedy classic Four Lions has led to fans calling for a statue.

The versatile Exeter City man, who spent 13 years on the books at Manchester United and made one first-team appearance in 2017, scored the only goal of the game in the Carabao Cup third round against Luton before being sent off. He then shared a snap of his celebration against the Premier League opposition on social media – to the delight of his fans.

One reply said: "Demi this is an all-timer celebration." A second added: "What a reference." A third reply said: "This might be the best celebration of all time." A fourth fan agreed: "Build the statue."

Released back in 2010, the political satire black comedy features a group of radicalised British Muslim men living in Sheffield.

Faisal showed how he had been covering his beard with his hands as part of the act – as recreated by Mitchell at St James Park.

Mitchell, 26, was born in Manchester and played for Fletcher Moss Rangers before being spotted by Old Trafford scouts.

He spent time on loan at Hearts before joining Blackpool on a permanent deal, signing for Hearts in 2022 and Exeter in the summer.

The former England youth international was dismissed for a second yellow card, but manager Gary Caldwell was full of praise.

He told BBC Sport of the League One star: "He's been fantastic since he came to the club. "He's a player with huge talent. He has to put it together and I think he has in many moments since he's been at this football club.

"Tonight, playing on the wrong side, switching him to the other side, scoring a goal, but being a constant threat with his dribbling and his ability to run us up the pitch was absolutely amazing."
