Fans think Newcastle have an ‘actual baby’ in starting XI as teenager starts

Fans can’t believe the age of Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley, who's been handed a first Premier League start.

The 17-year-old makes just his second league appearance against Bournemouth in Saturday’s evening kick-off in an injury-hit midfield, recently coming on as a substitute in the Magpies' Champions League defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The Gateshead-born midfielder makes his second start for the club after previously being named in the starting line-up against Manchester City in the EFL Cup third round before he was replaced at half-time. Miley made his debut for the Magpies on the final day of last season as a second-half substitute against Chelsea.

But with Eddie Howe’s side down to bare bones in the middle of the park, the England U19 international gets his chance. In midfield, Newcastle are without Bruno Guimaraes through suspension while Sandro Tonali won’t feature for the rest of the season due to his betting breaches ban.

Fans reacted to Miley’s inclusion as Newcastle shared a picture of the baby-faced midfielder, one comment on Twitter said: “No way this kid is 17”, a second added: “He is SO baby, dear lord.” While a third wrote: “That face isn’t old enough to know what a GCSE is”.

Newcastle fans – are you excited to see Lewis Miley playing for the first team? Let us know in the comments section.

The Newcastle faithful were excited to see the teenager, who only turned 17 in May, given a maiden league bow, one fan wrote: “Lewis Miley, wow. What an opportunity for him. Can see him rotating a lot with Longstaff. An incredible show of faith by Howe.” A second said: “Miley has shown what he’s capable of since Chelsea last season. He deserves the start tonight.”

Miley could become a regular in the Newcastle squad until the January transfer window, when Howe can next look to bring extra bodies in the midfield, or even beyond should he impress in the first team.
