Fernandes’ comments on Ronaldo as Man Utd make ‘formal offer’ to agent

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a sensational move back to his former club Manchester United in recent weeks.

Juventus are reportedly keen to get the 35-year-old off their wage bill, given he earns a staggering £28million each season.

Reports in Portugal last week claimed Man United had made a former offer to Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendez, which the forward is aware of and considering.

The report added that for now the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is remaining focused on Juventus, who are currently fifth in Serie A – four points behind leaders AC Milan.

It seems highly unlikely that United will re-sign Ronaldo in the summer despite the fanfare surrounding the transfer speculation.

But one man who would seemingly be delighted to see Ronaldo back at Old Trafford is his compatriot Bruno Fernandes.

The United midfielder is a huge fan of the 35-year-old, and previously admitted to falling in love with the Red Devils because of Ronaldo.

"My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club," said Fernandes, after joining the club from Sporting Lisbon.

"For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.

"I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team.

"A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can't wait to start to repay that on the pitch."

Fernandes also revealed that he personally spoke to his international team-mate Ronaldo after putting pen to paper with the Red Devils in January.

"I spoke with him after, not before. I said before – Manchester, for me, was the dream team. I always wanted to play for this team and it doesn't matter who can talk about it – bad or good, I will come," Fernandes added.

"It was my dream to play in the Premier League. I have the choice to come to Manchester United and it was two dreams in one. It was perfect.

"Of course, I spoke with Cristiano after and he spoke very well about the club. I spoke with him some days ago, again.

"Every time I speak with him, he asks me how Manchester is and if everything is okay.

"Everyone knows he spent a lot of time in Manchester and he has consideration for the club. He likes the club, I think he won his first Ballon d'Or here, so it's a club who've marked him, for sure."

The admiration isn't all one way either, as although Ronaldo hasn't spoken out about Fernandes himself, his former Red Devils team-mate Rio Ferdinand did so on his behalf shortly after the 26-year-old arrived in Old Trafford.

"I've spoken to a few of his teammates at national level and club level," Ferdinand told FIVE. Nani, my old team-mate, says [Fernandes is] a fantastic player, says he's perfect for England. Says he's got all the tools, all the right attributes.

"Cristiano said he's fantastic, creates chances for him. He can manipulate the ball, take the ball, confident. These are the type of things that you want to hear when Manchester United are signing a player.

"So fans, based on what I've heard about him and what I've seen, I'm hopeful and confident that this guy can go out there and do the job."
