Chelsea could axe four players in an attempt to raise funds for a move for Declan Rice.
The Blues have been in free-spending mode this summer, blowing their rivals out of the water in the transfer window.
The Stamford Bridge outfit have snapped up six players this summer as Frank Lampard plots an overhaul of the squad.
Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, and Kai Havertz have all joined for just over £200m.
But they are not done yet and the Blues boss has his sights set on two more arrivals – with one on the way.
Edouard Mendy is set to join imminently from Rennes to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No. 1 jersey.
However, it is West Ham's Rice that Lampard has made his top target for the remaining weeks in the transfer window.
The England international has been at the centre of his transfer aims but the Hammers have batted off their London rivals.
But with the window ticking down to the final day, that stance may alter as they struggle to sell off their high earners.
David Moyes has made strengthening the defence a priority but cannot find buyers for the likes of Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini and Sebastien Haller.
Nevertheless, West Ham are doing their utmost to keep hold of Rice and have priced him as high as £80m.
After Chelsea's arrivals, their squad is looking particularly bloated and Lampard knows he must let some go in a bid to balance the books somewhat.
The first on his exit list is Jorginho, who had lost his regular spot in the first-team last season and could suffer as a result of the added competition.
After Maurizio Sarri got sacked from Juventus, links on his departure have gone cold, though, so another midfielder has been told he can leave in the shape of Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The Frenchman has already agreed to join AC Milan but the details are yet to be thrashed out but it looks likely he will move there on another loan with an option to buy.

Rice would most likely join to play in defence and with Silva and Sarr already onboard, Andreas Christensen could be the one to make way in the transfer window.
Chelsea would love to find a buyer for Danny Drinkwater but there would be very few suitors to pick up his £100,000-a-week wages after his disastrous spells on loan to Aston Villa and Burnley.
But if someone takes a gamble, the Blues would let him go without much of a fight.
