England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted that his current crop of stars can ill-afford to be waiting another four years for an international trophy.

The Three Lions played their last competitive action of the year this week, when they defeated Iceland in the UEFA Nations League.

And now, with a delayed Euro 2020 on the horizon and a rapidly approaching World Cup soon after, Southgate says the time to win silverware in the national shirt has approached for many players.

Gareth Southgate says his senior stars like Harry Kane cannot to wait longer for silverware

Southgate this week put forward his view that the current England side has the right blend of experience and young talent, while warning that some of his senior stars are no longer able to continue to wait for success and recognition.

‘What we have got is some depth now back up by more youngsters we think can come through as well,’ Southgate told the Mirror.

The England boss feels his side has the right balance of emerging stars and experienced pros

‘So the long-term for England looks good, we’ve got to keep winning in the short-term and make sure we maximise this group now and the experienced players amongst them.

‘They don’t want to hear us say “we can win in four years’ time.” That is not going to float their boat. They want to win now.’

England have now been placed among the favourites to triumph at the delayed Euro 2020, and pick up their first major piece of silverware since 1966.

The Three Lions boast some of the best young talent in their ranks and look in strong shape

Southgate is already plotting for this potential outcome, and suggests all players of different ages and experience in his side can assist with this.

The England boss added: ‘Although some of the younger ones will be better prepared in that longer period, there is no reason why we cannot align the two and have some very exciting times.’
