Gary Lineker discusses Jude Bellingham's move to Real Madrid
Gary Lineker has tipped Manchester United star Mason Mount to be his potential replacement as host of BBC show Match of the Day, having been impressed with the England man’s presence in front of camera. Having fronted the Beeb’s flagship sports highlights show for nearly 25 years, Lineker has been discussing the names that could step up and host the programme when he calls it a day.
That moment could have come sooner than perhaps expected, as earlier this year Lineker was forced to step back from presenting the show after backlash to his criticism of the government’s immigration policy on Twitter. However, after receiving immense support from the sporting community – Lineker was back in the main seat and continues to present alongside the likes of Ian Wright and Alan Shearer.
Speaking to Shearer and former Manchester City star Micah Richards on their ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, Lineker floated a few names as the trio discussed current footballers who could succeed the 62-year-old on the BBC in 20 years – with Lineker particularly impressed with United star Mount after delivering a couple of lines to camera previously.
“Kasper Schmeichel as a goalkeeper, very good,” Lineker said. “His dad’s done lots of punditry, that’s not a bad shout. Can you remember Alan, when we did the World Cup in Moscow and there were three young footballers?

“It was Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Ryan Sessegnon. They came to watch us do the TV shows. And Mason Mount sat in my chair and was doing a few things to camera, and he wasn’t too bad. Who knows, maybe Mason Mount, we’ll see.”
Mount made the move to United from Chelsea this summer in deal worth up to £60million and has a long way to go before considering his post-football career at 24. Though Shearer pondered over another name, one of Mount’s England colleagues in Tottenham star James Maddison.

“I think James Maddison because I think he talks really, really well,” Shearer said, to which Lineker agreed and added: “He’s very eloquent and he’s very good tactically. I think he’s the best of the players in the post-match interview.”
Richards also waded in on the conversation and said: “A little bit left field, but Conor Coady. In terms of people want strikers, but I’m going with a defender. He knows the game really well, speaks really good. I’ve worked with him on Match of the Day and he’s done Sky as well.”
The trio speaking positively over a number of young players may hint that Lineker has no plans to leave his role as MOTD host anytime soon, though has previously hinted that Jermaine Jenas is “drifting more towards my role”.
