Gary Neville blasts "slack and scruffy" Harry Maguire after England red card

Gary Neville blasted Harry Maguire as "slack and scruffy" after the Manchester United defender's red card for England against Denmark.

Maguire's disastrous start to the season continued when he received a second yellow card just 30 minutes into the Nations League clash at Wembley on Wednesday.

The centre-half twice lunged into tackles late, and referee Jesús Gil Manzano was left with no choice other than to give him his marching orders.

Maguire has been way below his best throughout the season so far, with many speculating that the 27-year-old may have been affected after he was convicted for aggravated assault on Mykonos over the summer.

He has appealed against convictions for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and bribery following a brawl with police on the Greek island in August, and is awaiting the outcome of that legal process.

Maguire also came under fire for his performance in United's most recent Premier League game.

OleGunnar Solskjaer's side were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham, meaning they have shipped an incredible 11 goals in just three top-flight games so far this season.

And after Maguire's sending-off against Denmark, United legend Neville put the boot into the defender.

"That sums up his last 4-6 weeks," Neville told Sky Sports. "Terrible time for him. I thought he was lucky with the first challenge. That was in between a yellow and a red.

"It's scruffy play from him. The touch is really slack, and then the follow-through…"

It got worse for England after Maguire's dismissal, with Denmark taking the lead a few minutes later through a Christian Eriksen penalty following a defensive mix-up between Jordan Pickford and Kyle Walker

And Maguire's dismissal led to unlucky Ainsley Maitland-Niles being hauled off on his England debut in order for Tyrone Mings to come on and restore some defensive shape.

Chris Sutton said Maguire would have to "show real character" to bounce back from his latest setback.

"Maguire's confidence is just shot to bits at the moment and it's horrible to see because I do think he's a really talented footballer and a good footballer," said the pundit on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"But this season he has been woeful and he's going to have to show real character to come back."

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp said Maguire needed to rediscover his confidence quickly ahead of United's upcoming games against Newcastle, PSG, Chelsea and RB Leipzig.

The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder said at half-time: "It would be very easy for us to sit here, rip him apart and say 'oh he's having a nightmare, he's conceding goals'.

"He's having a moment. He's having a really bad moment in his career that he's going to have to somehow pull himself together.

"He's got a big weekend coming up for Manchester United.

"He's got to get his confidence back. He's a player really lacking confidence.

"There's a lot going on in his life. We sometimes forget that. When you go out on the football pitch, you think everything is going to be alright but you can genuinely see he's really struggling with his game at the moment."
