Green Street director ‘tricked’ West Ham into letting them film at Upton Park

The directors of Green Street had to "trick" West Ham United into allowing them to film at Upton Park.

The iconic 2005 film, chronicling the journey of an American football fan who had been ingratiated into a hooligan 'firm' involved a classic scene that was filmed at the Boleyn Ground. It saw the main character Matt, played by Lord of the Rings star, Elijah Wood, attend the Hammers' clash against Birmingham City.

It's often remembered as one of the most iconic scenes in the whole entire film. However, with the setting being a real life football match and the contents of the action perhaps being something West Ham may not want to put their name to, the directors had to be clever.

The scene features five lads from the West Ham firm, swearing and gesticulating at all that was happening on the pitch.

During the match, another person who is part of the firm known as 'bomber', dressed in a bright-orange vest reserved for media personnel, walks in front of the Birmingham fans and started shouting: "you dirty northern b*******" – as well as a whole host of other words not appropriate for print – before he was wrestled away by stewards.

It is widely recalled as one of the most memorable scenes from the controversial movie.
