City host Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday night, and they head into the encounter as heavy favourites despite their recent 2-0 defeat at home to United in the Manchester derby.
And in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Guardiola was asked about Southampton’s recent 9-0 hammerings against United and Leicester.
Manchester City will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League vs Southampton
The reporter asked: ‘While they have shown that they can compete against the best, Southampton has shown on some occasions that they can concede nine goals. Is that something you will bear in mind?’.
But Guardiola immediately hit out at the question, claiming that a lack of respect had been shown to Southampton.
The Spaniard joked: ‘We will score 18. 18-0 we are going to score. This will be the result.
‘They [Manchester United] scored nine because it was 89 minutes 10 vs. 11. You think it’s a joke? Come on, we’ll try to win the game, that’s all and get the three points.
‘I’m a big fan of this team and the way they play. I see the quality of what they do and it’s another test to play good and try to win.’

The Saints were hammered 9-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on February 2
Southampton have been on a horrid run of form recently and their confidence took a massive hit when they were humiliated 9-0 at Old Trafford on February 2 when Alex Jankewitz was sent off after just 79 seconds before Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red in the closing stages.
Their horrible slump saw them fall down the Premier League table but a 2-0 win at Sheffield United last weekend will have given them much-needed confidence – with the Saints currently sitting 14th.
But they face an almighty task on Wednesday against a City side who look set to storm to their third Premier League title in just four seasons.
Despite the derby defeat against United, Guardiola’s men currently sit a huge 11 points clear with just 10 matches remaining.
They were also humiliated 9-0 by Leicester at home in the Premier League in October 2019
