Hamburg keeper scores calamitous own goal in derby day disaster against rivals

Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes scored a calamitous own goal to gift rivals St Paul a three-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga 2. Fernandes miscued a clearance high into his own net in one of the most embarrassing moments ever seen in football.

St Pauli took an early lead against rivals Hamburg, with the two teams first and second in the German second-tier respectively. Former Hull forward Jackson Irvine put the league leaders ahead after 15 minutes.

And they led 2-0 thanks to a cringe-inducing moment for Fernandes. The shot-stopper passed a short goal-kick to one of his central defenders, who laid the ball off to his defensive partner.

The ball was then passed back to Fernandes but it bobbled as it made its way towards the 31-year-old. With the ball bouncing at an awkward height, the former Borussia Dortmund academy star opted to attempt a long clearance rather than continue with the short passing around the defence.

But Fernandes completely miscued his kick. The ball powerfully ricocheted off the top of his foot and flew into the roof of the net.ย

Fernandes’ error handed St. Pauli a 2-0 lead, which would have seen them lead Bundesliga 2 by six points. But the goalkeeper was bailed out by his team-mates, who produced a brave performance to ensure they secured a point against their local rivals.ย

Former Cardiff centre-forward Robert Glatzel halved the deficit in the 58th minute before Immanuel Pherai equalised just two minutes later.ย
